Kaʻala Farm and the Military

Kaʻala Farm has recently been blessed by the continued partnership of the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard Youth Challenge Academy. Once each month, the academy's young women (kaikamahine) join us to mālama ʻāina, generously contributing their time, energy, and aloha to the restoration of our beloved wahi pana. Their kōkua has been an invaluable source of support, and we are deeply grateful for their willingness to serve. Each first Sunday of the month, Aunty Lynette Cruz warmly welcomes the girls as they become part of our Kaʻala ʻohana for the day.

Kaʻala Farm is also exploring an opportunity to partner with the military through the Department of Defense's Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Program. We are working with several partners to apply for funding to establish strategic firebreaks and strengthen wildfire resilience between the Lualualei and Waiʻanae ahupuaʻa. If awarded, this grant would begin in September 2027 and support efforts to protect both the surrounding communities and the natural and cultural resources entrusted to our care.

For nearly 50 years, Kaʻala Farm has welcomed people from all walks of life through our gates, including members of the military. We believe that caring for the ʻāina creates opportunities for connection, understanding, and personal growth. Whether visitors come to volunteer, learn, or simply experience this special place, our hope is that they leave with a deeper appreciation for Hawaiian culture, our ancestral traditions, and the reciprocal relationship between people and the land. We remain grateful for everyone who joins us in this shared commitment to mālama ʻāina.
